Abstract

Cerebral palsy (CP) is among the most common neurological disorders in children, resulting from a non-progressive brain injury occurring before, during, or shortly after birth. Although the brain lesion itself does not worsen over time, its functional consequences are permanent. Children with CP often experience impairments in motor control, balance, and muscular coordination, in addition to muscle spasticity that limits their ability to perform daily activities and negatively affects their independence and quality of life. Despite significant advances in physical therapy and motor rehabilitation programs, therapeutic outcomes may be limited in some cases, prompting the exploration of adjunctive treatment methods that enhance neuroplasticity and improve rehabilitation response.

In this context, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has emerged as a novel therapeutic option in neurorehabilitation. This treatment involves exposing the child to a high-pressure environment while inhaling oxygen at elevated concentrations, aiming to increase tissue oxygenation and improve blood perfusion. Some studies suggest that HBOT may contribute to improvements in fine motor function, balance, and limb flexibility, in addition to potential positive effects on cognitive and behavioral aspects. However, the scientific evidence remains mixed, with some research reporting limited or temporary benefits, highlighting the need for rigorous systematic studies to determine its effectiveness and identify the patient groups most likely to benefit.

Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in improving motor performance in children with cerebral palsy and to analyze its outcomes in comparison with conventional therapy programs, contributing to evidence-based clinical decisions and enhancing the quality of life for children and their families
