Effectiveness of a Motor Rehabilitation Program in Improving Range of Motion and Psychological Status among Patients with Frozen Shoulder Syndrome
Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a motor rehabilitation program based on psychological support in improving the range of motion and psychological status of patients with frozen shoulder syndrome, in addition to reducing pain and increasing muscle strength. The study adopted an experimental method using a pre–post design with one experimental group. The study population consisted of patients with frozen shoulder syndrome who attended physiotherapy centers at Al-Firdous Clinic in Tripoli. A purposive sample of seven patients aged between 48 and 65 years was selected.
Data were collected using several measurement tools, including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) for muscle strength, range of motion measurement using a Goniometer, and the Spielberger Anxiety Scale to assess psychological status. The rehabilitation program was implemented from 19 September 2025 to 7 January 2026 and consisted of three phases, with three sessions per week. The total number of sessions was 18, and each session lasted between 45 and 60 minutes.
The results showed statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-measurements in favor of the post-measurement for all study variables. Pain levels decreased significantly, the shoulder joint range of motion improved markedly, muscle strength increased, and the psychological status of participants improved. Effect size values indicated a very large effect of the rehabilitation program on range of motion and psychological support, a large effect on pain reduction, and a moderate effect on muscle strength.
The findings indicate that the motor rehabilitation program combined with psychological support is effective in improving both physical and psychological aspects among patients with frozen shoulder syndrome, highlighting the importance of integrating psychological support within rehabilitation programs to achieve better therapeutic outcomes.
